The African Century Initiative

FROM PROMISE TO POWER

Africa is entering a defining period in its history. The continent possesses extraordinary human, natural and economic potential. But potential alone does not create prosperity, opportunity or influence. The defining question is whether Africa can build the institutions, leadership, enterprise and systems needed to turn that potential into lasting power.

The African Century Initiative has emerged from a simple conviction: Africa’s future will not be determined by its resources alone, but by what Africans choose to build with them.

The Initiative grows out of the ideas explored in The African Century: From Promise to Power and from more than four decades of engagement with Africa’s public, private and development sectors. It brings together ideas, experience and action around a central question:

What will it take for Africa to shape the century ahead?

The Initiative is a platform for ideas, dialogue and action—bringing together people who are committed to exploring new pathways for Africa’s development and helping turn promising ideas into practical initiatives. It will engage with some of the questions that matter most to Africa’s next chapter:

• How do we build stronger, more trusted institutions?
• How do we cultivate purposeful leadership?
• How do we unleash African enterprise and investment?
• How do we deepen economic integration?
• How do we create systems that enable people, communities and nations to flourish?

Some of this work will take the form of research, writing and public conversation. Some will happen through convenings, partnerships and networks. Some will find expression in practical ventures and initiatives. The common thread is simple: to move beyond describing Africa’s promise and begin building the pathways through which that promise can become power.

AN INITIATIVE EMERGING FROM A JOURNEY

The African Century Initiative is being birthed and initially hosted by Ohala Africa, whose own journey began with a focus on unlocking the economic potential of the Lake Victoria region and has evolved into a broader engagement with Africa’s economic transformation.

The Initiative grows naturally from that journey. The experience of working alongside communities, enterprises, institutions and partners has reinforced a conviction that Africa’s transformation cannot be achieved through isolated interventions. It requires new thinking, stronger institutions, purposeful leadership, productive enterprise and a willingness to build for the long term.

Ohala Africa provides the Initiative with an initial institutional home and a platform from which it can develop its own identity, partnerships and areas of work.

For now, the Initiative is best understood not as another institution, but as a growing body of ideas and a platform for action—open to people and organizations who share a commitment to Africa’s future.

FROM IDEAS TO ACTION

The African Century Initiative seeks to connect five dimensions of transformation:

• Ideas: Generating and sharing fresh thinking about Africa’s future.
• Leadership: Encouraging leaders who combine purpose, integrity and the courage to build.
• Enterprise: Supporting the entrepreneurs, investors and institutions that create Africa’s productive capacity.
• Institutions: Strengthening the systems of trust, governance and collaboration on which sustainable transformation depends.
• Action: Turning ideas into experiments, partnerships and initiatives that can make a practical difference.

These are not separate agendas. They are interconnected parts of the work of building an Africa that can create opportunity for its people, exercise greater agency in the world and shape its own future.

The African Century is not simply a prediction. It is a possibility—and a responsibility.
